Randy Gaw - Principal

Randy Gaw joined the Federal Government of Canada in May 1976 with the Dominion Fire Commissioner’s Office in Ottawa.  He worked in Ottawa and Edmonton as a Fire Inspector and later as District Fire Commissioner in Saskatoon.  While working in Western Canada, he became very familiar with the federal Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) facilities and in 1986 joined CSC at National Headquarters (NHQ) as the Chief of Operational Fire Safety.  His extensive experience has involved fire and life safety inspections, plan reviews, fire safety training and fire investigations of airports; agricultural research facilities including farms, laboratories and grain terminals; museums including cultural and national historic sites; health care facilities including hospitals and nursing stations; educational facilities including schools and training complexes; business and commercial facilities including office buildings, industrial storage and manufacturing; and, detention and correctional facilities including police detachments and large prison complexes.

Randy has been active in all aspects of fire protection and occupational safety & health. He has more than 30 years actively participating on standards writing technical committees for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC). His most satisfying accomplishment to date is the installation of automatic fire sprinklers in all CSC Living Units and the adoption of this requirement by NFPA and correctional jurisdictions internationally. 

Since retiring from CSC in 2013, Randy has remained active with NFPA including as Past Chair and current Member of NFPA 101 and NFPA 5000 Technical Committees on Detention and Correctional Occupancies. He is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) as recognized by NFPA and ANSI.
